I think the Android app is fixed! Edit: nope, it’s not… (.﹒︣︿﹒︣.)

April 18, 2014 By Peter 23 Comments

So a lot of people were reporting that the Android app was crashing right when you open it. I just spend the last couple of hours with a developer and we think we’ve identified some kind of database error that was causing the crash.  Hopefully it’s now fixed. The new version 1.1 of the app has been submitted to Google Play and should be available in a couple of hours.  If you’ve already downloaded the app you should get some sort of notification saying there’s a free update.  I’m not 100% sure how it works in Android. Please update to version 1.1 and then leave a comment if it’s working now. If you left a negative review because it crashed and it’s now working please do me a huge favour and remove the negative review and put a 5-star one instead. Positive reviews are incredibly important to helping the app get found in the app store especially since there are so many copycat apps that have stolen content and graphics from this site. If you update to version 1.1 and you’re still having problems.  Please do not post a negative review.  Leave a comment here or email me at (removed) and let me know what the error is, what kind of phone you’re using and what version of Android you’re using. I’ll set up another meeting with this developer and we’ll try to get any other issues fixed then. Thank you very much if you downloaded the app and thank you even more if you left a positive review.  Please let me know if the app’s working now or if we’re still having problems. One more thing, if you haven’t downloaded the app yet don’t download version 1.  Just wait a couple of hours and download version 1.1.

Edit: the app is still not working.  I have a developer going over everything right now and I’ll post an update when we release another version to the store.

The Japanese Emoticons Android App is Finally Here!

April 13, 2014 By Peter 12 Comments

Well it took way longer than I originally planned and a ton of stuff went wrong during the process but the Japanese Emoticons Android app is finally finished and available for download on Google Play! I ended up having to hire a second developer to help me finish and submit everything but everything is good now and I’m quite excited that this app is finally available. Making an Android app I’ve now learned is pretty different from making an iOS app so the Android app doesn’t match the iOS one 100% but it’s really close. So click the link below to download the app and enjoy and a final note please leave a 5-star review.  That is the absolute best way to show your support.  The more good reviews the app gets the better chance it has of people finding it.

Where is the Japanese Emoticons Android App?

March 6, 2014 By Peter 13 Comments

So I’ve been getting a lot of emails, comments and messages about the Android app so I thought I’d make a post explaining what’s going on because it’s a little bit messed up. I got the first build of the app probably over a month ago now.  Everything was working great, there was just a few minor issues I found when my friends and tested the app on their Android phones. I sent them the list of fixes and they said I’d get the next build soon, which I hoped would be the final build and everything would be good to launch. At this point communication started breaking down and they stopped returning most of my messages and emails but I did get a message a couple of weeks ago saying I should get the second build of the app the next day.  I haven’t been able to get a response out of them since. The people working on my app are great.  They built the most recent version of the iOS app and did a fantastic job and up until the first build of the Android version everything was fantastic as well. The problem is that I hired a group of people from an app development company that’s based in the Ukraine and due to everything that’s going on over there right now politically I don’t think they’re at work… So the whole situation kind of sucks for everyone right now and I feel for them.  I’m sure they’d like to be at work getting paid to make apps and life in general probably really sucks for them right now especially since their country was just invaded by Russia… On my side however it also sucks.  The app is almost done and I’ve already sunk a significant amount of money into this project. I can probably make a case to get my money back through the site I hired them through since I never got the final product but that’s not entirely fair to them either since they’ve almost finished doing all the work.  Plus then I have to go through all the trouble of finding a new contractor, interviewing people and start development from scratch again. So my plan at this point is to wait another little bit for things in the Ukraine to hopefully calm done.  I’m hoping everything will settle down, these guys will go back to work and then it should just be a couple of days at the most to test out that last build and maybe fix one or two more tiny things.  The app is really close to being done. If that doesn’t happen then at some point I’ll have to assume the worst happened to them and fight to get my money back and start development over again which is too bad because I really liked working with these guys. So for everyone wondering, that’s where we’re at right now with the Android app.

Question for Android experts!

I know very little about developing apps and even less about Android since I’ve never really used it.  I have an APK file of the first build of the app.  Is this useful at all for development?  Would I be able to hand this file off to another developer and would they be able to access the code and finish developing the app? I don’t have any of the source code or working files and I know now for an iOS app at least there’s a whole folder of various resources and things you need.  Is everything somehow contained in the APK file or is that pretty much useless? Thanks in advance if anyone is able to help answer this question.

Japanese Movember Emoticons

November 9, 2013 By Peter 1 Comment

Movember, which takes place during the month of November is when people from all over the world band together and raise money and awareness for men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Men grow a “Mo” which is slang for moustache for 30 days to become walking and talking advertisements for men’s health causes. Men who support Movember are known as Mo Bros.  They start the month clean shaven and grow and groom their moustache throughout the month raising money along the way. Women can also participate in Movember as Mo Sistas and help raise awareness as well. So this month, in order to show support for Movember you can use some of the moustache emoticons from this website and even make up some of your own. You can easily add ┏ and ┓ to the sides of the mouth of any other Japanese emoticon in order to give it sort of a droopy looking moustache. There are also other types of moustaches you can see in emoticons like ( ˇ෴ˇ ) or (•̴̑⁎̵̭•̴̆). If you’d like to register for Movember and get more involved you can visit Movember.com and if any of you create any really awesome Japanese emoticons with moustaches please share them in the comments.  I’ll get them added to the site and other people can use them as well.

This Site is Suddenly 1,000 Times More Awesome!

October 18, 2013 By Peter 28 Comments

So as you can see the site is suddenly a lot more awesome! I did a complete design overhaul and I think everyone will agree that everything looks much, much better.  Plus a bunch of things that were broken on the previous site are now fixed. Not only is the site completely redesigned but I also did a massive overhaul of the emoticons database.  I actually have an emoticons database now, it’s a giant spreadsheet and it’s pretty awesome. I removed a bunch of duplicate emoticons, fixed a bunch of broken ones since a lot of characters don’t display correctly in a lot of situations and I reworked the categories. I renamed some of the categories and added in eleven new categories: Crying, Running, Thinking, Crazy, Excited, Birds, Rabbits, Random, Characters, Clouds and a category I like to call WTF. Not only that but some of the emoticons are now in more than one category to make finding them much easier. For example (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ is in the action category since throwing a table is an action but it’s also in the angry category since you’d probably have to be pretty angry to throw a table like that. We also have an awesome random emoticons generator!  A huge thanks to Dominick for setting that up!

Oh yeah, I also added like a thousand emoticons to the site!

If you suggested an emoticon to me it should be up there.  I had a massive back log of emoticons to add so thanks everyone who made suggestions for being patient.  If I somehow missed your suggestion send it to me again and I’ll get it added. In case you were wondering there are now 2,177 emoticons on this site.  To be fair some of them are on different pages since they fit into more than one category so there’s probably closer to 2,000 unique ones but that’s still a crazy amount. So in conclusion I hope you enjoy the new and massively improved JapaneseEmoticons.net and a huge shout out to the below people for suggesting a bunch of the new emoticons I added to the site: SJ Rod Mai Chan Diab Riisu eikichionizuka69 Vargdis emiyuui Xioabear MakaLawliet MissMad Meru Bea Knemer Luis Mey Mainero Christopher Clark Greta Delpozzo AB Alis zeffire lelele bodie Annastacia bopx Automatoncreature Barry Laura Michael Kostiuk Adam Metcalfe Webmetz Pantsu Lisa lauraAmelia 4357986 Carrie Rosa Victor Ailey Rebecca Minzki Susan
