Android App, App Reviews and a Few Other Things

September 7, 2013 By Peter 20 Comments

An Android version of the iOS app

So a lot of people have been asking for an Android version of the app so here’s the official deal with what’s happening with that. I had originally planned to make both an iOS and an Android version at the same time however I quickly found out that I could not afford to do this.  So I decided based on the mobile traffic to this site being mostly from iOS devices to do the iOS version first. Then I could hopefully make back the money it cost to make this app and then follow up with an Android version and this is still the plan. The reports are in for sales of the app for August and so far I’ve made back about 20% of what it cost to have this app made so it looks like it might be another couple of months until I can get the Android version happening. I’m hoping that we’ll be able to use the database of emoticons that was created for the iOS app again as well as most if not all of the graphics that were used in the app and that this will make the Android version cheaper and faster to make.  I don’t know a thing about app coding though so I could be completely wrong.

So how can you help?

If you’ve downloaded the iOS app please leave a 5-star review.  I didn’t want to program any of those annoying “please review this app” pop-ups into the app but we do need reviews so I’m asking here.  It only takes a couple of seconds and is important for a number of reasons.

1) I need at least 5 reviews to show an average star rating on my app.

This is the first time I’ve ever made an app and I’m still learning things like reviews only show up in the country that they were made.  So far only Canada and the United States have 5 or more reviews and are the only countries currently showing an average rating.

2) Reviews help the app get found in search results in the iTunes app store.

This is especially important since some guy has literally stolen all the content off this site as well as graphics that I created for this site and released his own iPhone app. His app currently ranks before mine in the search results because it gets a boost since it’s “free”.  It’s not free though, he offers a few of the emoticons free and then you have to pay inside the app to unlock all the content that’s literally copied and pasted from this website.

A side note:

I’ve been pretty cool about people taking the emoticons from this site and putting them on their own sites since I don’t own them, no one does so whatever.  Even if you’ve copied and pasted everything straight off this site I haven’t really cared that much. I have however put a lot of work into this site and assembling the collection of emoticons here and if you’re going to steal all the content from this site with the exact same categories and lists, steal my graphics, steal my app description and then intentionally try to mislead people who are looking for my app into downloading yours then you’re officially a dick so don’t do that. But by all means feel free to use these emoticons where ever you want and do whatever you want with them.  A link back to this site is always appreciated but it’s ok if you don’t do that.  Just don’t be a dick.

Some other site news

I’ve got some other plans for this site over the next little while when I can get the time to work on it. An awesome guy created this random emoticon generator: http://dominick.p.elu.so/fun/kaomoji/index.php and we’re going to hopefully get it added to this site. I also plan to do a complete re-organization of all the emoticons and probably create a bunch of new categories to hopefully make that a bit better and easier to use.  The categories are a bit out-dated, especially with all the suggestions you guys have been making. Also with that will quite possibly be a site redesign since this site is starting to get a bit too complicated for this design. And for all of you that have suggested emoticons I haven’t forgotten.  Once I re-organize everything and also hopefully create a new system that will make entering the emoticons to the site easier I’ll be uploading everything in my backlog of suggested emoticons. So that’s it for news for a while.  Thanks again for all the support and a huge thank you to everyone who’s downloaded the app!

The Official Japanese Emoticons iPhone & iPad App Is Finally Here!

August 5, 2013 By Peter 48 Comments

After long last the official Japanese Emoticons iPhone and iPad app is finally here!

Download the Japanese Emotions iPhone/iPad App here!

I need everyone who likes to use this site to help me out a little bit here.  During the first week that this app is available I need as many downloads as possible and more importantly as many 5-star reviews as possible.

This helps the app get found easier on the app store so please, if you enjoy using the site download the app, leave a 5-star review and tell all your friends!

About the App

This app features the entire database of Japanese emoticons available on this website.  Simply tap on the emoticon you want and it’s copied.  Then just paste it into whatever other app you want to use it. There’s a favourites menu so if you have certain emoticons that you really love to use you can save them so you’re not always digging through a giant list to find them. You can also create your own emoticons and even generate random ones, save them to your favourites menu and use them like the other emoticons. Here are some examples of awesome randomly generated emoticons that I made with the app:

The Story and History Behind This App

I’ve been sort of planning and working towards making an app for over a year now.  I finally got everything designed and planned out and hired a programmer in May and the app was finished in June. Then the Apple App Store Review Board refused to approve the app which was something I never expected. They said the app didn’t have any entertainment value and wasn’t useful. So I ended up fighting with the Review Board for about 3 weeks but they would not change their  mind. A friend of mine suggested I add a create an emoticon feature so I designed that section, hired a programmer again and added that section to the app.  That ended up taking another couple of weeks to get done. So the app was supposed to have launched back at the start of June but got pushed back to August because off the App Review Board. This is why it looks like I’ve been teasing a surprise now for a really long time.  I was planning on launching the app a lot closer to when I first made that “something awesome is coming soon” blog post. But everything’s good now and you can download the app today.

Download the Japanese Emotions iPhone/iPad App here!

And remember, we need as many downloads and 5-star reviews during this first week as possible to please tell your friends and also leave a 5-star review.

I hope you enjoy the app, I put a ton of work into it. ☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆

The All Emoticons Page is Back! Plus Some News

July 5, 2013 By Peter 18 Comments

A huge number of you requested it and the All Emoticons page is back! No, this isn’t the awesome surprise I hinted at earlier.  That surprise is still coming.  It’s been delayed due to forces beyond my control but when that surprise is announced it will be awesome so stay tuned.  It’ll be soon. In the mean time though the All Emoticons page is indeed back. The reason why I had removed it is because it basically doubles the amount of time that it takes to update this site as I have to add each emoticon to two pages. Adding more emoticons to the site is a bit time consuming.  I’ve got a giant backlog of hundreds of emoticons to add to the site and with the current site I haven’t really figured out a good way to do it quickly. There’s basically two ways to do it.  Add the emoticons one at a time from my back log to their individual pages or sort them first. If I go through my backlog list of emoticons it takes a while because I’ll add one to one category, then add the next one to a completely different page, then go to another different page for the third one, etc. Or I could try sorting my backlog list first and then add a whole bunch to each page at a time. Both methods take a decent amount of time and because I didn’t want to update the site in two places that’s why I removed the All Emoticons page. But yeah, don’t think I’m complaining, I like this site and I’m quite proud of the work I’ve done and I enjoy working on it. So now I’ve figured out a way to set up the All Emoticons page so that when I update the other pages this page updates automatically so that’ll make updating the site much faster and easier. So thanks for visiting this site, thanks for the emoticons suggestions (keep them coming!), look forward to more updates and most importantly, look for a big awesome announcement hopefully coming in another week or two at the most. Edit: I forgot to mention that the link to that page is in the upper left menu on the site.

Something Awesome is Coming Soon!

May 29, 2013 By Peter 39 Comments

Some time over the next week or two I’ll be announcing something new and very awesome for this site! I’m not going to go into too much details yet because I want to keep it a bit of a surprise but I’m almost done making something awesome that has taken a long time.  It’s something a lot of you have requested too. So watch for news over the next little while.  I think you’ll be excited to see what’s coming.  I know I am! ☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆

Japanese Emoticons is now on Twitter and Facebook

January 21, 2013 By Peter 7 Comments

This site is now on Twitter and Facebook! You can follow JapaneseEmoticons.net on twitter at the following link: https://twitter.com/JEmoticons.  Would you believe that JapaneseEmoticons was like 2 characters too long for a twitter username? If you prefer to follow this site on Facebook you can do so at the following link: http://www.facebook.com/jemoticons.  I had to go with JEmoticons as a username here too since someone else had already claimed JapaneseEmoticons. I’ll be posting news, emoticons and possibly some other random interesting stuff.  You can also suggest emoticons to be added to the site through either Facebook and Twitter if you want too.
