Beginning a Giant Site-Wide Emoticon Clean-Up

June 8, 2015 By Peter

Over the next little while I’m going to be doing a giant site-wide emoticon clean-up. Some of the categories such as happy emoticons or angry emoticons have a huge number of emoticons all collected together at random. I’m going to be re-organizing them putting similar looking emoticons together in tables, much like the holidays page or words page, which should hopefully make it much, much easier to find the kaomoji or donger you’re looking for. I also know that I’ve seen duplicate emoticons on some of the pages so hopefully I’ll find all of those during this process and get those removed. There’s also bunch of broken emoticons that for whatever reason have missing characters or other weirdness.  During this process I’m going to do my best to rebuild any broken ones as well. I’ve also got a couple of new categories I’m thinking about adding in which should also make it a bit easier to find what you’re looking for. I have no idea how long this is going to take since there are over 10,000 Japanese emoticons on this site but I’m going to slowly plug away at it over the next while and hopefully you’ll notice the improvements and it’ll help make things easier. Thanks as always for all your support and for using this site! ٩(^ᴗ^)۶

JapaneseEmoticons.net is Now JapaneseEmoticons.me!

May 5, 2015 By Peter

Well I’m not sure what happened to the old website but over time the performance got worse and worse, it was harder and harder to edit and a couple of times it seems it was even under some kind of attack.  Plus I never really liked the last site design. Therefore I decided to rebuild the site, make it much better and move it to a much better web host.

The Name

I decided to change the name of the site for a couple of reasons.  I think JapaneseEmoticons.me sounds a lot better than the .net.  It’s more personal and kind of cuter and since the whole idea of this site is that you’re expressing yourself with Japanese emoticons I figured a .me address fit in with that idea better. Plus it was a lot easier to just register a new domain and use that to make the new site rather than try to transfer the domain to the new host and build a new website.  The old site would have had to some down and it would have been too complicated for me.

The Design

I’m a lot more proud of the way the site looks now.  I think the last design looked kind of amateurish and I was never really a huge fan of how it turned out.

The Web Hosting

The old company I was using to host the site was great but this site has grown to the point where it was time to move to a much higher end server.  The site is now getting close to 23,000 visits a day and I think a lot of what was causing problems before was because of the amount of traffic the site was getting. You should notice that the site loads a lot faster now.  On a speed test the new site scored a 98% while the old one scored only 78%.  That should make using the site a lot better. The new server is a lot more secure as well so that should help with any weird attacks or hacks or whatever.  That’s stuff I don’t really understand and with this new web host I don’t have to worry about it. The new hosting plan is a lot more expensive though which leads me to…

We Now Have a Patreon

I’ve set up a Patreon account for JapaneseEmoticons.me.  If you’ve enjoyed using the site for the last several years please considering funding us.  The revenue the site received from Google Adsense is way down over the last several months and the new web host is a lot more expensive. Even if you can spare $1 that would be a huge help and that would go towards helping us keep the site going as well as help with updates to the mobile apps. I really want to make some big updates to the mobile apps but that’s not something I can really afford at this point. I’ve put a lot of work into the site over the last several years so if you enjoy it please consider sending a few dollars on Patreon. Every little bit is really appreciated and I really don’t want to turn JapaneseEmoticons.me into one of those sites that’s just absolutely plastered with ads.

Conclusion

So that’s all I really have to say for this update.  I hope you enjoy the new version of the site and always remember you can suggest us emoticons and we’ll get them added to the site. ᶘ ᵒᴥᵒᶅ

A Giant Site Update with Almost 1,000 New Emoticons!

October 13, 2014 By Peter

I’ve just finished another giant site update the main feature of which is almost 1,000 new kaomoji emoticons added across almost every category on this site.  That officially brings the total number of Japanese emoticons on this site to more than 4,000! 4,011 to be exact. Here are some of my favourite ones from the new update:
A cute little duck ˂⁽ˈ₍ ⁾˲₎₌
An army of kittens ₍˄·͈༝·͈˄₍˄·͈༝·͈˄( ͒ ु•·̫• ू ͒)˄·͈༝·͈˄₎˄·͈༝·͈˄₎
A pretty cool looking cat ₍˄⌓⃘ ˳̫̬ ⌓⃘˄₎ค˒˒
This totally looks like the Awkward Moment Seal meme (´°ω°`)
A Pikachu kaomoji!  It’s now my goal to find/make myself a bunch of other Pokemon emoticons ϞϞ(๑⚈ ․̫ ⚈๑)∩
Cheer up, it’ll be ok ( ‘́⌣’̀)/(˘̩̩ε˘̩ƪ)
Quite an expressive crying emoticon ๐·°(৹˃̵﹏˂̵৹)°·๐
Rise and shine! ٩(。•ω•。)و
Success! \\(۶•̀ᴗ•́)۶////
More success! \\ ٩(๑❛ワ❛๑)و ////
Some kind of cat or something? โ๏∀๏ใ
Dinner is served! ♨(⋆‿⋆)♨
Halloween creepy eyes ヾ(◎o◎,,;)ノ
These eyes totally look like some kind of creepy Halloween style illustration (ノꐦ ◎曲◎)ノ
One more with the creepy Halloween eyes (∴◎∀◎∴)
A great laughing emoticon ʱªʱªʱª (ᕑᗢूᓫ∗)
There are a lot of great laughing kaomojis in this update (๑ॢ˃̶͈̀ ꇴ ˂̶͈́๑ॢ) л̵ʱªʱªʱª
One more great laughing example (੭ु˶˭̵̴⃙⃚⃘᷄ᗢ˭̴̵⃙⃚⃘᷅˶)੭ु⁾⁾~
A cute love themed kaomoji ♡(  ૢ⁼̴̤̆ ꇴ ⁼̴̤̆ ૢ)~ෆ♡
Yes! Or possibly shaking a fist ╭( ・ㅂ・)و
A bit of a more angry yes or maybe shaking a fist (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و
Oh you *giggle* (ง ˙ω˙)ว
Touching “things” ԅ(¯﹃¯ԅ)
An otter! Seriously, look how cute it is! (:ᘌꇤ⁐ꃳ 三
Outta my way! ε=ε=ε=(۶•̀Д•́)۶
Reminds me of Gob from Arrested Development.  Come on! ⁽⁽(੭ꐦ •̀Д•́ )੭*⁾⁾ ᑦᵒᔿᵉ ᵒᐢᵎᵎ
I’ve now added all the emoticon suggestions you guys have sent me.  If you sent me something in the last couple of months then it’s now on the site. Another thing I did was clean up a bunch of the pages.  For example, some of the categories like Table Flipping, Running and Words have emoticons that are bit larger than the ones in other categories.  Since the font size on this new site is a bit bigger than it was before I’ve put these pages in two column tables instead of three column ones so the pages are a lot less cluttered and easy to read. Also, since I’ve now acquired a bunch of nose bleed kaomojis I added their own Nose Bleed Emoticons page.  The site’s come a long way since I was first asked to find someone a nose bleed emoticon over Twitter and had never seen any at the time. This update was brought to you by a Japanese musical group called Moumoon, specifically the albums No Night Land, LOVE Before We DIE and ICE CANDY which for some reason I had no idea were out (despite following them on Twitter and sometimes getting emoticons from them). Because if you’re going to spend a ton of time updating a website about Japanese emoticons you have to listen to J-Pop while you’re working.  I highly recommend you check out Moumoon though, they’re great. I still have many thousands of kaomojis to sort through so look forward to more updates, some app news and some other cool stuff in the future! Finally, a huge thanks to everyone’s who’s liked us on Facebook as we’ve now hit over 10,000 likes!

Welcome to the Brand New JapaneseEmoticons.net!

September 20, 2014 By Peter

You may have noticed that the website looks a bit different now, hopefully better.  That’s because I’ve just done a major re-design. The old version of the site was starting to get too busy looking and because of the amount of traffic this site now gets everything was starting to load pretty slow. I’ve switched everything over to the Genesis framework for WordPress which should help considerably with the site load time and overall make everything a lot more smooth. Plus I think the simpler design makes everything look much better as well. Things may be a little weird for the next couple of days while I try to fix all the weird little glitches and what not from switching the site over so please be patient if you see anything weird. I’ve also got a bunch of plans for the site over the next weeks and months so stay tuned for more news and thanks for all your support! (* >ω<)
